According to the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson Electric Power company is looking to lease rooftop space atop of schools.

Each agreement will come with different terms. One 200,000 sq. ft. highschool rooftop could meet the energy demands of 170 homes. Leasing rooftop space will meet the growing supportive demand for solar energy. The program is called the Bright Roofs program.

The energy generated through Bright Roofs will be available to customers through the company’s Bright Tucson Community Solar program, whereby customers interested purchase 150 kilowatt-hour blocks of solar energy, adding only $3 apiece to their monthly bills.

With recent budget cuts in education across the United States, the increased income could provide much needed relief for classrooms and teachers. Buy energy you use already to save your local school. It’s a win-win situation.

The following are exerpts from the article located at: http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/green/articles/2010/10/28/westwood_to_lease_rooftops_for_solar_farm/

Westwood officials are reviewing bids on a proposal to lease the roofs of municipal buildings for a solar farm, a way for the town to save on energy costs without expending any money.

Steps are underway to take advantage of financial incentives provided through the American Recovery and Investment Act, which expires Dec. 31. A committee is being formed to review the bids.

Westwood put out the request after being approached by Real World Consulting and A Plus Solar International, New Jersey companies working with a manufacturer in Taiwan that produces the panels.

There would be no cost to the town to enter into the deal, officials said. The winning bidder would supply the panels and maintain their roof-top operation.

“Basically, we would agree to give them the space, and they install it at their cost,’’ Jaillet said. “Then, we’ll pay less for our energy.’’

ROBBINSVILLE — The Board of Education has given a Trenton architecture firm the go-ahead to write the bid specifications for a 1.4-megawatt solar energy power purchase agreement that would essentially lease out the district’s rooftops at the elementary, middle and high schools to a green energy investor.

The Aug. 31 vote was 7-0 to pay the Spiezle Architecture Group up to $38,000 to write the technical request for proposals for private entities interested in bidding on the project. Newly appointed board member Vincent Costanza abstained and Thomas Halm was absent.

”We are targeting a November bid opening,” said Carol Boyne, the chairwoman of the school board’s Finance, Facilities & Transportation Committee. If the contract is awarded by January, the project could be done next summer.

The anticipated benefits to the district are a $54,000 annual savings in energy costs and the free replacement of aging roofs on the older sections of Sharon Elementary School and Pond Road Middle School, which would be made a required condition of the power purchase agreement. The new roofs would have otherwise cost taxpayers $2.5 million if the district had to pay for it.

Since Robbinsville High School is a new building, its roof does not need to be replaced prior to the installation of a solar energy system there. The roof at RHS should last the length of the 15-year power purchase agreement.

The roof over some sections of Sharon Elementary School, however, is more than 20 years old and the oldest section of Pond Road Middle School is 16 years old, according to district Business Administrator Bob DeVita.

”We need to get those roofs replaced,” said Ms. Boyne prior to the vote. “The PPA is the way to get this done.”

The district had been counting on the funding for the roof replacement project to come from the $39.6 million school construction referendum, but voters defeated that in March. The failed referendum would have provided $6.6 million for the new roofs as well as repairs to the existing elementary and middle schools; the remainder was for the construction of a new K-5 elementary school.

Having the PPA require the bidder to replace the roofs at two of the three schools prior to the installation of the solar panels gives the district a creative way to fix its roofs despite the defeat of the March referendum.

The school board originally had considered the possibility of financing the purchase and installation of the solar system itself because Spiezle officials said the district could realize revenues of at least $200,000 a year, after debt service payments, if it owned the 1.4-megawatt solar energy system.

However, this option was rejected by the board because it did not think it could persuade voters to approve the $11.6 million bond referendum that would have been needed to finance the purchase and installation of a solar energy system, even one that would be ultimately cash-positive for the district.

The PPA option, although not as lucrative for the district, does not require a bond referendum because the district would not own the 5,890 solar panels installed on top of the three schools.

By law, a PPA can only be for 15 years, meaning the private entity that owns the solar energy system would have to remove it in 2026 if the school district and the company are unable to negotiate a new PPA.

SunEdison Awarded 2.2 Megawatts of Solar Rooftop Projects for GE Capital Real Estate

Ontario Feed-in Tariff projects to begin construction fall 2010
TORONTO, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ — SunEdison, a leading worldwide solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE: WFR), announced today it has executed an agreement to develop 15 industrial rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) projects for GE Capital Real Estate, a global real estate investment company.

Under the terms of the agreement, SunEdison will finance, build, own, operate, monitor and maintain photovoltaic solar energy systems with capacity totaling 2.2 megawatts (MW). GE Capital Real Estate will receive lease revenue for rooftop space allocated to the projects, without any upfront capital equipment costs. The projects will be hosted at GE Capital Real Estate facilities, and the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) will purchase the energy produced under the terms of Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff Program (FIT)*.

Construction on three of the 15 rooftop PV systems is expected to begin this fall. The majority of projects will be located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) including Vaughan, Brampton, Burlington, Markham and Mississauga, with additional systems located in London. Over 20 years, the systems are expected to generate more than 47 million kWh of clean energy—with the potential to offset an estimated 9.8 million kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of removing 5515 of cars from the road for one year.

“GE Capital Real Estate is focused on being at the forefront of environmental leadership in commercial real estate,” said Kathy Lee, Managing Director at GE Capital Real Estate Canada. “Our partnership with SunEdison and the installation of rooftop solar arrays is an important step in meeting our sustainability goals.”

“As the largest North American solar energy provider, SunEdison has a solid background in bringing solar projects to fruition,” said Jason Gray, Canada Country Manager for SunEdison. “Working with GE Capital Real Estate and the Ontario government, our goal is to help build a greener tomorrow for Canada.”

*About the Feed-in Tariff Program (FIT)

Ontario’s Feed-In Tariff (FIT) program for renewable energy generation is a cornerstone of the province’s Green Energy Act. Under the program, participants are paid a fixed-price for the electricity they generate over a 20 year contract period. For more information, visit http://fit.powerauthority.on.ca.

Buzz around town is that beekeeping is going towards a micro level. With bee health declining, competition from overseas production, and more, bee keepers are going through a challenging time. Wherever there is agriculture produced, bees have a role in pollination. Without healthy bees, agriculture suffers. With the advent of urban agriculture on the rise, there are more and more beekeepers looking at the approach of urban farmers to search for rooftops, open lots, and land acreage closer to populations to host bee hives. This reduces the extremely high carbon footprint involved in current bee production, pollinates the urban farms, and more. New York recently became very bee friendly, and rooftop bee production is allowed.

To find or list rooftops/lots/land to lease for bee hosting: http://www.seglet.com

For New York City Beekeepers Association: http://www.nyc-bees.org/

UNFORTUNATELY, bee keeping in urban environments is still illegal in many cities across the U.S. For a list of not-bee friendly areas see this link: http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/blogs/bees/illegal-urban-beekeeping-0602
